Why this exists
The pattern is consistent. Sign up free. Connect to your people. The platform learns what makes you angry, lonely, or jealous — then sells that signal to advertisers. The "free" was always a transaction; you were just on the wrong side of it.
The differentiator
Facebook has "friends." Twitter has "followers." NaviBook has squares — four concentric circles of trust, with explicit permissions per circle. You decide who sees what, who can message you, who can see when you're online — without having to defriend anyone or maintain ten lists.
Square One
The people you'd call at 3 AM. Full access: every post, every story, your real-time location if you allow it, your phone, your email.
Square Two
The people you'd grab dinner with. Most things visible, some held back. They can message and call, but don't see everything.
Square Three
Coworkers, distant family, old classmates. Polite distance — they see what you broadcast, but you control message access.
Square Four
The internet at large. Read-only access to what you choose to make public. No DMs unless you opt in. No metadata leakage.
Move someone between squares any time. They don't get notified. They can't tell. The squares are for you, not for them — your mental model of trust, made operational.
What's in the box
Chronological. No algorithm pushing rage. Filter by square if you want a calmer view.
DMs and group chat, end-to-end encrypted. No separate app to install. No metadata kept.
Public, friends-only, or invite-only. Federated — businesses can host their own groups on their own servers.
Per-square notification rules. Only Inner Circle interrupts at 11 PM. The rest waits till morning.
Every post, comment, message, friend list — downloadable as JSON at any time. Your data is portable by design.
Same v5 system that protects Navi chat protects NaviBook DMs. Distress doesn't get monetized.
How it's hosted
Same dual model as the rest of Free Navi. Use the main NaviBook instance we run, or run your own. Business subscribers get a third option — host your community's groups on infrastructure you control.
The main instance
We host it. You sign up with your existing Free Navi account. Included in the hosted subscription. The default for everyone who doesn't want to think about servers.
Cost: Part of Pro at $9.99/mo when it ships (final tier placement still being decided).
Federated business groups
Business subscribers can host their team's NaviBook groups on their own Supabase, Azure, Google Cloud, or AWS instance. Your group data stays on infrastructure you control. Members still sign in through their Free Navi accounts.
Use case: Internal company forums, customer communities, alumni networks, any group with regulatory or policy reasons to keep data on owned infrastructure.
When it opens
The backend exists (1,544 lines of Python, ready to wire to the web). What's left is porting the desktop UI into browser-native pages and onto the freenavi.app spine. We're not promising a date — but we'll tell you the day it goes live.
One email when NaviBook opens. Nothing else, ever. We use the same privacy contract as the rest of Free Navi: email-only, no enrichment, no resale, no tracking pixels.
